What Is Eyelid Rejuvenation?

Eyelid rejuvenation can improve the appearance of upper eyelid drooping or hooding and reduce the “puffy bags” and wrinkling of the lower eyelid. We offer a wide range of procedures for treating these conditions. For those that need surgical or invasive intervention, we provide upper and lower lid blepharoplasty, which involves the surgical modification of excess skin via scalpel and/or laser.

For those patients that do not need or do not want an surgical procedure, we can offer non-invasive options to improve the appearance of the eyelid region as well.

Eyelid rejuvenation procedures, both surgical and non-surgical, aim to address concerns such as sagging eyelids, wrinkles, and puffiness, helping patients achieve a more youthful and refreshed appearance.

Surgical options include:

  • Blepharoplasty – This eye lid surgery that can be performed on the upper or lower eyelids, or both. It involves removing excess skin and fat to tighten and rejuvenate the area. And while it offers long-lasting results, it does require downtime for recovery.

  • Brow lift – A brow lift can complement eyelid surgery by lifting sagging brows, reducing forehead wrinkles, and creating a more harmonious look. It’s ideal for patients with both upper eyelid and brow concerns.

Non-surgical options include:

  • Botox – Botox injections can help relax the muscles around the eyes, reducing crow’s feet and wrinkles. Results are temporary but provide a quick and relatively painless option with minimal downtime.

  • Dermal fillers – Hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers can be used to add volume to hollowed areas around the eyes, minimizing under-eye bags and dark circles. Results are temporary but offer immediate improvement.

  • Laser resurfacing – Laser skin resurfacing can improve skin texture and tighten the eyelid area by stimulating collagen production. They can help with fine lines and skin laxity, with varying levels of downtime depending on the treatment depth.

Should You Consider Eyelid Rejuvenation?

Do you have “bags” or puffiness under your eyes?

Do your upper eyelids droop?

Do your friends tell you that you look tired when you are not?

Is it difficult to apply eye makeup?

Does your lower lid appear to have a shadowed appearance?

BOTOX LogoBOTOX

BOTOX (Botulinum Toxin Type A), has been used therapeutically for more than 17 years to treat a variety of medical conditions. In 2002, Botox was approved by the FDA for the treatment of frown lines between the brows.

As skin becomes less elastic with age, those folds or furrows result in stubborn lines. Because frown lines are dynamic lines caused by overactive muscles, they can usually be treated with very low doses of Botox, which are administered via a few tiny injections directly into the muscles responsible for the frown lines.

By blocking the release of a chemical that causes these muscles to contract, Botox enables them to relax. The effects are very localized and, when administered by an experienced physician, do not affect your ability to smile, laugh, or otherwise show expression.

The entire procedure takes approximately 10 minutes, and there is no downtime afterward. Discomfort is minimal and brief. Localized pain, swelling, redness, and bruising may be associated with the injection.

You can expect to see results within days after your treatment and may continue to improve for up to a week. Visible results have been shown to last up to 4 months. After that, many patients are ready to return for a follow-up treatment.

Wrinkle Fillers

With time, exposure to the sun, and other elements, skin components break down, losing underlying structure and volume, and unwelcome lines and wrinkles appearing.

Fortunately, the appearance of wrinkles and facial folds can be smoothed by adding structure and volume underneath and bringing sunken skin back up to the surface. This is called soft tissue augmentation and is generally done by injecting products such as Juvederm, Restylane, or Radiesse under the skin to achieve a temporary effect.

Fillers are useful in adding volume to lips, chin, and cheeks, and treating the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds) and the fine lines around your mouth. The procedure is simple and convenient, and the results are practically instantaneous.

Some patients may experience discomfort around the injection site. To optimize your comfort during the short procedure, your physician may anesthetize the treatment area. After treatment, you may have some redness, swelling, or bruising. This will normally last less than seven days. Depending on the type of filler used, results generally last 6-12

Lasers

New state-of-the-art lasers have revolutionized our approach to the treatment of a wide variety of skin disorders including pigmentation, freckles, brown spots (often referred to as “age” or “liver” spots), and tattoos. Lasers are often the treatment of choice to remove “broken blood vessels”, rosacea, spider veins, leg veins, and port-wine stain birthmarks as well as hypertrophic scars and stretch marks.

How Do Lasers and Light Sources Work to Remove Vascular Lesions, Stretch Marks, and Scars?

These lasers and light sources produce a bright beam of light to destroy the blood vessels that make up the vascular lesions or that are contained within the scar or stretch mark, without damaging the surrounding tissues. Factors such as the type of vascular lesion, the age, color, and location on the body determine whether lesions can be removed.

What Does It Feel Like?

You may experience mild discomfort similar to being snapped by a rubber band. Treatment may require one, two, or more sessions, with each session taking between 15 and 30 minutes.

Facial Treatment

How Will I care for the treated area?

In most cases, you will wash the treated area with a mild soap, gently patting the surface dry, followed by the application of Aquaphor ointment. Most treatments result in minimal redness, similar to the appearance of a slapped cheek, and last only hours. This allows most patients to return to work the day after treatment.

Removal of Pigmented Lesions.

Various lasers are used to lighten and remove a variety of dark skin spots. The laser produces a very bright beam of light that destroys the cells containing pigment, with very little damage to the surrounding skin.

Comfort Control

For most procedures, the discomfort is so minimal that no anesthesia or pain medication is needed. For some conditions, a topical anesthetic cream may be used before treatment.

Following the procedure, ice and Tylenol will soothe any discomfort. Do not use aspirin, Advil, or Motrin prior to or a few days following treatment. Strenuous exercise and contact sports should be avoided, and alcohol intake limited.

Avoiding the sun, wearing sunscreen, and wearing cover-up clothing are critical, both prior to and after treatment. Following the procedure, you will receive written instructions on the care of the treated area.

Side Effects and Safety

There are rarely any permanent problems with laser therapy. although occasionally some lightening of the skin occurs. However, normal skin color returns within three months after the treatment of vascular lesions. And although rare, a slight indentation may develop, which usually resolves in a few months. Scarring also occurs in less than one-tenth of one percent of all cases. And because lasers produce an intensely bright beam of light, everyone in the treatment room wears protective eyewear.

Laser Skin Resurfacing

Developed in the early 1990s and perfected over the past few years, laser skin resurfacing has revolutionized the treatment of aging skin and scars. Before the arrival of laser skin resurfacing only facelifts and deep chemical peels were available to rejuvenate aged skin.

Laser skin resurfacing not only removes wrinkles, some creases, age spots, and skin discoloration but also tightens sagging skin, thus eliminating the need for a facelift for many individuals. These lasers are also effective at resurfacing many types of scars and other textural irregularities.

They allow gentle, layer-by-layer removal of the skin. All wrinkles, from fine to deep lines, improve with laser skin resurfacing, as do unsightly creases. Scars that have the most favorable response to this technique are sharply defined and shallow.

Performed on an outpatient basis, the procedure may take between 30 minutes and two hours, depending on the extent of the treatment.

Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal uses a low-energy laser to gently remove unwanted hair. They are safe, fast, gentle, and effective, and can be used on almost any area of the body where smoother, younger, hair-free skin is desired. The number of treatments needed will depend on several factors, such as hair density, your ethnicity, your hair growth cycle, thickness, color, and location.

Laser treatment also slows the growing capacity of hair follicles in the growth cycle at the time of the treatment. Since some hair follicles may enter their growth cycle after your treatment, multiple treatments may be required to deliver optimal results.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion uses very fine sand crystals to remove the dead outer layers of the skin, stimulating the production of fresh young skin cells and collagen, resulting in a smoother, fresher complexion. It is a relaxing outpatient procedure with almost no recovery time, so patients are able to leave our office and resume activities immediately with the skin only exhibiting a faint red glow after the procedure.

A series of 4-6 treatments at 3-4 week intervals is often needed to obtain optimal results, but many patients like the feel of their skin so much after treatment that they continue to come in for monthly refresher treatments.

Regardless of your skin’s condition, most patients will notice an improvement in their skin’s appearance. Fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots may be improved, and many patients report that their skin seems softer, smoother, and younger-looking so that makeup goes on easier and smoother and lasts longer. In addition, combining microdermabrasion with the Aramis laser enhances anti-acne effectiveness.

Latisse

Latisse is a solution used to grow eyelashes longer, darker, and thicker. It is used nightly on the skin of the upper eyelid margin at the base of the eyelashes. After 16 weeks of nightly use, the full effects of the treatment can be seen, even though improvement is usually noticed by the second month. Latisse should be continued after the initial 4-month period to maintain the new eyelash growth. Usually, three or four nights a week will be sufficient.

Your lashes are expected to return to their previous appearance over several weeks to months if Latisse is discontinued. Possible side effects are minimal. Contact our office to purchase your Latisse and to learn more about this exciting product.

Superficial Chemical Peels

Treatment with salicylic acid skin peels is useful in rejuvenating sun-damaged skin. Discovered in the 1970s, superficial chemical peels have been widely used to create an even and controlled shedding of damaged skin cells to give skin a smoother, younger, fresher look. It also can help control mild acne and is quite good for improving skin discoloration associated with acne.

A chemical peel uses a solution applied to the skin to remove dead skin cells and stimulate the production of new skin cells. It tightens the skin, reduces wrinkling, and restores a more youthful appearance. The procedure takes between 15-20 minutes, and 4-6 treatments are usually necessary to achieve the desired effects. Most patients tolerate the treatment well and report slight stinging or temporary redness, and possibly some scaling for a few days.

TCA Chemical Peels

Medium-depth chemical peels, done with trichloracetic acid (TCA), remove sun-damaged surface layers of the skin. They can also eliminate precancerous skin lesions and actinic keratoses, as well as fine lines and brown spots.

These peels are safe, with a healing time of five to 10 days, during which you will need to keep out of the public eye and care for your newly exposed skin. TCA peels are a more aggressive form of treatment than salicylic acid and typically used for patients with more advanced photoaging. However, it is an excellent, safe, time-tested procedure in the hands of skilled physicians such as ours.

Dermapen

Treatment with Dermapen in Tinley Park restores youthful skin. It is also known as Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT) when a highly concentrated serum is used in the area treated during the session. The serum can contain hyaluronic acid, which increases the moisture in the skin as well as other ingredients that stimulate the fibroblasts of the skin to reproduce collagen & elastin.

Juvederm

With Juvederm, patients can easily restore the smooth and youthful appearance of their skin. Thanks to this popular injectable dermal filler option, age lines and facial folds can be a thing of the past.

Restylane

Restore your youthful appearance with Restylane. Skin laxity due to aging can lead to creases and sunken areas on the face and the backs of the hands, but the Restylane line of dermal fillers can target these areas to smooth away wrinkles and restore volume.

Radiesse
