Sclerotherapy

If you have pronounced varicose veins, sclerotherapy in Tinley Park might be a treatment you want to explore. It is a minimally invasive procedure which has been effective in reducing the appearance of bulging varicose veins and visible spider veins. Treating blood vessel malformations with sclerotherapy has been practiced for a very long time now due to its efficacy.

What Is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a procedure used to treat those tiny purple and red blood vessels found most commonly on the thighs or lower legs of women. These are usually called spider veins or telangiectasias and are considered hereditary.

Am I a Good Candidate?

If you have noticed that your veins have become unsightly and enlarged, you may be a good candidate for sclerotherapy. Children with vascular malformations may also be recommended for this treatment. If you are suffering from venous insufficiency, you may also undergo this procedure if compression stockings do not help.

It is important to be in good overall health before undergoing this treatment. It is also best to be within your ideal weight and not obese. You are not recommended for sclerotherapy if you are pregnant or nursing. You are not an ideal candidate if you have existing blood clots or inflammation in your deep leg veins.

Your Consultation

During your sclerotherapy consultation, a physical examination of your target areas will be conducted. Special ultrasound techniques will be employed to determine the site of your venous disease and your compatibility for the procedure. A review of your medical history will take place, including current medications, existing allergies, and underlying conditions.

The Procedure

During the procedure, a sclerosing solution is injected into the vein through a micro-needle. The tiny needle generally causes very little pain. The sclerosing solution displaces the blood within the vein causing the vein to blanch (turn white). This causes irritation to the lining of the vein, making it swell shut. The treated veins will gradually fade over the next 4-6 weeks.

Healing and Aftercare

You will be asked to wear heavy-duty stockings to help keep the pressure on the veins. This will reduce bruising around the treated areas and help keep the veins closed. Patients are encouraged to take it easy for the next 24 hours; however, walking is encouraged because it increases blood flow through the other veins.

In about 6-8 weeks, another treatment is usually required. In most cases, about 50-70% of the treated vessels will be gone for good. However, new veins may appear and additional treatments are generally required for optimum results.

How Much Does Sclerotherapy Cost?

The cost of sclerotherapy can differ from one patient to another due to the highly individualized nature of the procedure. The overall price can be impacted by the total number of injections, target areas, and sessions.
