Developed in the early 1990s and perfected over the past few years, laser skin resurfacing has revolutionized the treatment of aging skin and scars. Before the arrival of laser skin resurfacing only facelifts and deep chemical peels were available to rejuvenate aged skin.

Laser skin resurfacing not only removes wrinkles, some creases, age spots, and skin discoloration but also tightens sagging skin, thus eliminating the need for a facelift for many individuals. These lasers are also effective at resurfacing many types of scars and other textural irregularities.

They allow gentle, layer-by-layer removal of the skin. All wrinkles, from fine to deep lines, improve with laser skin resurfacing, as do unsightly creases. Scars that have the most favorable response to this technique are sharply defined and shallow.

Performed on an outpatient basis, the procedure may take between 30 minutes and two hours, depending on the extent of the treatment.

I was seen on time and the exam was very thorough – all my questions were answered. The doctor was very professional and attentive – the assistants were also very pleasant and helpful. Thank you.

Am I a Good Candidate?

Candidates must have realistic expectations for laser skin resurfacing treatment. Patients with elastic skin are ideal candidates. Healthy individuals without skin infections are excellent candidates. Laser skin resurfacing will be best for patients with a lighter skin tone.

Before the Procedure

During your initial consultation, we will evaluate your skin to determine if this is the best treatment for you. We will discuss your concerns and goals for laser skin resurfacing treatment. The procedure will be explained in detail, and you can ask any questions you may have.

Your medical history will be reviewed, including information about any allergies or medications you may be taking. You may be given a prescription for creams to use nightly for at least several weeks before the procedure as well as antibiotic and antiviral medications to be taken around the time of the procedure.

How to Prepare for Your Laser Skin Resurfacing Treatment

The preparation for your laser skin resurfacing treatment will start two months before your scheduled session. You will have to protect your skin before the treatment using sunscreen. This will greatly reduce the risk of pigmentation after your treatment.

Medications and supplements that prevent normal blood clotting must not be taken at least ten days prior to your laser skin resurfacing treatment.

The Procedure

Laser skin resurfacing treatment typically takes an hour or less. Photographs will be taken of the area to be treated. Pre-operative sedation may be given in the form of a tablet, one to two hours before the procedure. In addition, a local anesthetic will be injected at the treatment site.

Your physician will use the newer fractional CO2 technology to remove layers of skin and contract the underlying tissue to improve wrinkling. The use of the newer laser has been shown to minimize the risks of the procedure and speed the recovery time. Dressings will be applied afterward, and you will be given detailed instructions for home care. An escort should accompany you to the procedure to drive you home.

Care Post-operative

Immediately after the procedure, the treated area will appear red and swollen and will drain a clear-colored liquid. You will be asked to wash the area every few hours with a gentle cleanser (unscented Dove, Basis, or Purpose) and apply Aquaphor Healing Ointment frequently to keep the area moist.

Swelling resolves within several days. The pink color usually fades within six weeks, although it may persist for up to three months in some patients.

Skin care products and makeup, other than those suggested by our staff, should not be used until the treated area is completely healed. Sun protection is important during the immediate post-operative period. We will follow you with regular appointments for the first two weeks after the procedure, and less often for 6-12 months following treatment.

How Much Does Laser Skin Resurfacing Cost?

The cost of laser skin resurfacing treatment varies depending on the treatment plan. The size and number of targeted areas may impact the overall price.
